Black-eyed Peas - Feijão-Verde

Cow peas or Black-eyed peas - not the band... make wonderful salads, stews, and fillings. These beans were a gift from farmworkers and can be eaten green or dried. They are staple in North and Northeast regions in Brazil but can be easily cultivated anywhere.

Black-eyed peas in these parts ... and I love them with some fresh onion on top. So good for us, too!

I love black-eyed peas in summer with fresh onion, but in Portuguese they are NOT called "feijão verde" as printed but "feijão frade"

Dear anonymous, there are inumerous names for the same kind of beans, here in Brazil it is called feijão-verde when the pods are still green, and you can cook with them, as shown on last picture, they are actually green. They are called "feijão-de-corda" too when they are in another stage and are dried. Thanks so much for visiting!

Growing up in Texas, my mother would buy these at the farmers market with many other things and we had to sit on a bucket and help shell them (is that what having kids are for, lol?)

I know this was posted almost a year ago, but I wanted to say I am so excited to find it! I moved back to Florida from Fortaleza, and I found some "cowpea" seeds and bought them because they look so much like Feijao Verde. I can't wait to grow them and make some sopa de feijao verde! Too bad I can't get queijo coalho.

I love black eyed peas. I have not had the green ones in a long, long time.
Check out my vegan black eyed pea, brown rice risotto (http://weirdcombinations.com/2009/06/brown-rice-and-black-eyed-pea-vegan-risotto/) yummm.

Cheers,
